Frequently asked questions
Main questions
Aye, absolutely. I am a craftsman, not a factory or a production line. Every scratch, every crack, and every distillery stamp you see has passed through my hands in my workshop near Loch Lomond. Every item carries my personal "fingerprint" because I sand, cut, and oil everything myself.
I rescue authentic Scottish whisky heritage, stave by stave. This isn’t "lumber yard wood"; these are solid oak structures that protected the world’s finest spirits for decades in the dark warehouses of Islay or Speyside. I often work with relics from legendary or "silent" distilleries like Port Ellen 1977 or Brora 1978.
I would be honoured to help you create a "conversation starter" for your home. Whether it’s an original barrel end engraved with your family name or a bespoke gift for a fellow whisky lover, I handle the design personally. Just tell me your story, and I will prepare a design draft for you.
Those markings are the soul of the piece. They represent the specific distillery, vintage, and often the cask number where the whisky once matured. I treat these dates and stamps like relics, showcasing them so you can own a piece of history that should not exist anymore.
My entire mission is built on saving history from oblivion. I don't waste a single "wee" bit of wood. Even the smallest chunks from barrels like Laphroaig or Macallan are saved to impart the aroma of Islay or Speyside to your BBQ. It is 100% upcycled Scottish heritage.
My personal workshop is located right on the edge of the Loch Lomond National Park. Living here changed my perspective and inspired me to bring the beauty of these retired barrels back into the light.
Because I work alone and make everything to order, lead time is typically 3–14 days depending on the piece (more involved or bespoke work can take a little longer — I'll always confirm when you order). I'd rather get the sanding and finish right than rush it off the bench. Delivery then takes around 3–14 days after dispatch.
Aye, I certainly do. From my workshop in Scotland to your home, wherever that may be. I have experience shipping these sturdy oak pieces across the globe, ensuring they are packed securely to protect the history written in the wood. International shipping costs and times are calculated at checkout.
Because every piece is handmade to order and one-of-a-kind, I can only accept returns if your item arrives damaged or defective. If that happens, get in touch within 14 days of receiving it (a quick photo helps) and I'll put it right — I cover return postage on faulty items, and any refund is issued within 30 days. Personalised commissions can't be returned unless they're faulty.
If you are a "Whisky Connoisseur" looking for something rare, just ask. I often have stock from legendary names like Port Ellen or Brora. If I don’t have a specific stave in the workshop today, I can often source it through my network of traditional Scottish cooperages.
No — and I'm always upfront about this. I'm an independent maker; I'm not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any distillery. I simply rescue their retired casks and give the oak a second life, so the distillery names and original stamps are there to tell you honestly where the wood came from.
A stave is one of the long, curved planks that form the side of a cask — ideal as a wall plaque or the body of a pendant light. A barrel head is the round lid (the cask end), which usually carries the boldest distillery stamp and makes a striking circular wall piece. Both are solid reclaimed oak from the same barrel.
The fittings and cabling are included and ready to wire in, but I leave the bulbs to you, as everyone has a preference. For the warm, authentic glow in my photos I'd reach for vintage Edison-style filament bulbs. Each lighting product page lists the exact fittings (for example, E27) so you know what to buy.
Most pieces arrive ready to hang, with the fixings or pre-drilled holes — the product page says what's included. As solid oak has real weight, fix a barrel head to a wall stud or a proper wall fixing. Care is easy: dust occasionally, keep it indoors away from damp, and if the wood ever looks dry, a light wipe of linseed oil brings the grain back to life. The natural marks and patina are character, not flaws.
Because it matters in Scotland. 'Whisky' (no 'e') is the Scotch spelling and the one I use for almost everything I make. 'Whiskey' with an 'e' belongs to Irish and American drams — so a piece made from a Jack Daniel's cask is reclaimed 'whiskey' oak, while a Macallan or Ardbeg piece is 'whisky' oak.
I don't make barrels — I rescue retired Scotch casks and craft lighting, wall art, furniture and gifts from them. Each piece is solid oak from a specific cask, still carrying its original distillery stamp, vintage and cask number (for example, Ardbeg 2016, Cask 8145) — provenance most makers can't show. Because no two casks age alike, every piece is genuinely one-of-a-kind: you're not buying décor, you're owning a piece of Scottish whisky history.
